HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc split a pair of overtime games last week beating the Knoxville Ice Bears 2-1 on Thursday before falling 3-2 in Columbus to the Cottonmouths on Friday.
Thursday, January 3 - Knoxville 1, Huntsville 2 - OT
HUNTSVILLE, AL - Colin Reddin gave the Huntsville Havoc a 2-1 (OT) victory over the Knoxville Ice Bears when he scored 19 seconds into the extra period.
Huntsville was led by goalie Dan McWhinney, who finished with 45 saves while allowing one goal. The solid play of McWhinney will be reflected in his goals against average, which pre-game was 2.71.
The Havoc were paced by Reddin, who racked up one goal.
Huntsville's penalty kill was spotless, allowing no goals on five Knoxville power plays. The Havoc relied on a core group of players for most of their offense, as Justin Fox, Reddin and Kyle Laughlin took 19 of the team's 31 shots.
Huntsville additionally got points from Ian Boots, who also finished with one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. More assists for Huntsville came via Leland Fidler and Aaron McGill, who each chipped in one.
Knoxville excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. The Ice Bears were held below their usual level of production. Knoxville averages 3.3 goals per game. The Ice Bears' offense rang up 46 shots on Huntsville's net.
Knoxville was led by Mark Van Vliet, who scored the team's only goal. Van Vliet scored 6:38 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Knoxville. Brad Pawlowski assisted on the tally.
The Havoc incurred 10 minutes in penalty time with five minors. Peter Skoggard rejected 29 shots on goal for the Ice Bears. Knoxville incurred six minutes in penalty time with three minors.
Friday, January 4 - Huntsville 2, Columbus 3 - OT
COLUMBUS, GA - The Columbus Cottonmouths' Matt Gingera scored 3:47 into overtime to beat the Huntsville Havoc, 3-2 (OT).
Columbus was led by Gingera, who finished with one goal.
The Cottonmouths excelled on the penalty kill, not giving up a single goal in three chances. With 33 shots on target during the contest, Columbus exceeded the 25.9 shots it averages per game this year.
Mark Thorburn also scored for Columbus. In addition, Columbus received assists from Derek Pallardy, Sam Bowles, and Chris Bailer, who contributed one a piece.
Huntsville's offense rang up 42 shots on the Cottonmouths' net.
The Havoc were helped by Justin Fox, who had one goal. Fox scored 17:04 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Columbus. Brett Liscomb assisted on the tally. Huntsville also got a goal from Sam Cannata as well. More assists for Huntsville came via Stuart Stefan, who had one.
