HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville Police continue to search for the killer of an Army officer who was gunned down in front of his Huntsville home Friday.

Lieutenant Colonel Alonzo McGhee, who served at Redstone Arsenal in the Army Contracting Command, was fatally shot Friday night, making it the first murder of 2013.

When police arrived at the scene on Pale Dawn Place, they found McGhee lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police released a statement Monday which said they were not going to talk about the case to the media because nobody has been arrested at this time.

McGhee was a running back for Georgia Southern from 1988 to 1990 and won two national titles. He also started a nonprofit program to give scholarships to students, and he tutored for the Boys and Girls Club.

Court documents showed he finalized a divorce from Fillis McGhee, the former principal of Hampton Cove Elementary, a week before he was killed.

In the settlement, he was awarded custody of his three children and granted the house.

"This is a man that was a decorated soldier a lieutenant colonel at the arsenal. He loved his children, he loved his country, and was a good man," said Mark McDaniel, McGhee's divorce attorney.

McDaniel said police did reach out to him regarding the case, but he could not divulge what was discussed.

The murder prompted Hampton Cove Elementary to increase security.

School officials said they added security at the school because of Fillis McGhee's relationship with the school. They said there is no threat at the school, but "in this day and age, it's a good precaution."

The military has custody of McGhee's body. Funeral arrangements have not been set.
