HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
170 Alabama Army National guard members will head off to support 'Operation Enduring Freedom' this weekend . A departure ceremony for the troops and their families was held Saturday afternoon in Huntsville.
The 128th Military Police Unit out of Athens will provide security support in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. first, they will undergo extensive training at a mobilization center. For many, this is their first deployment, the first time they've had to leave their families behind.
"We were given a lot of information. We were really well prepared by the unit and the family readiness group. As far as what to expect while were gone back home wise was really well put out to us," said, Specialist Rossman, Alabama National Guard.
The unit will be gone for a year where they will provide security forces support to units based there. The soldiers leave early Sunday morning from the National Guard Armory in Huntsville.
