How to stick to your New Year's resolution

Posted: Updated:

The start of the New Year usually brings about a lot of change for some people. They make resolutions to get in shape, lose weight and eat healthy. But nutritionists said some people who start off strong with their pledge don't stay that way.

Head Trainer and nutritionist at Champ Performance Training 24/7 Gym in Madison says that people can't finish what they started because their goals are too high.

"You get the people with the outlandish goals that come in around January, and they will only lose 5 lbs maybe and then they quit and get discouraged," he said.  "Then you have other people come in and lose the weight they wanted and then they quit. So by March, the New Years people are gone."

Melanie Barksdale doesn't plan to be one of those people.  She set her goal for the year and plans to keep it.  She stopped by the gym for a consultation.

"It's just about getting healthy and nutrition," she said.  "It's about losing some fat and gaining some muscle."

Swinney does custom meal programming and planning for his clients.  He said that combined with a regular work out can help keep those goals in focus.

"The best thing you can do is have a plan as far as how many days a week," he said.  "Be sure to set a reasonable goal. I want to work out three days a week every week.  You can do that. Now, if you say you will work out every single day, well that may be a little harder."

Swinney says if you're in the market for someone to whip you into shape, it's all about starting small and having the right person to lead you in the right direction.

"Find somebody highly educated with a minimum of five to seven years in college and then at least 10 years of one on one experience."

Swinney also advises people to be careful to avoid fad diets and cutting off certain types of food all at once, like carbohydrates.  He said if you're trying to improve how you look and what you eat, get with a support group or team, someone to hold you accountable and keep you on track.

Champs is set to have a grand opening at their Madison location on January 19th.
