Fired Muscle Shoals police officer appeals for job

Posted: Updated:
MUSCLE SHOALS, AL (WAFF) -

A fired Muscle Shoals police officer appealed to the mayor for his job at a closed-door meeting Thursday.

City leaders fired Greg Scoggins after his arrest for reckless endangerment and illegal hunting.

His attorneys said the hearing was intense.

Scoggins' future with the city is now in the hands of the mayor. Mayor Bradford is taking the appeal under advisement, and needs more time before he can make a decision.

During the hearing, Scoggins' attorneys said they did not deny or express remorse for what he did. They simply stated termination is too harsh a punishment for his actions.

Police arrested Scoggins after he shot and killed a 10-point buck on TVA property while on duty.

His attorneys said Scoggins is willing to do whatever it takes to keep his job with the police department, even if that means taking on a different role within the department.

If the mayor decides to uphold the termination, his attorneys will then request a hearing with the city's civil service board.

"To the mayor's credit, he said he had been up all night and he said he was really going to think about this because the mayor's the guy or one of the people that made the recommendation that Greg Scoggins be hired as a police officer," said Scoggins' attorney, Billy Underwood. "If the mayor was right 12 years ago that he should be a police officer, I believe the mayor is correct and he should still be a police officer."

At this time it's unclear when a decision will be made. Mayor Bradford was unavailable for comment after the hearing.
