PHIL CAMPBELL, AL (WAFF) -
It's been more than 20 months since the devastating tornado outbreak for April 27th, 2011.
Now one of the hardest hit areas is showing signs of progress. Phil Campbell High School was just one of the many structures destroyed by an EF 5 tornado during the outbreak, forcing students and faculty to cram into portable units until a new school is built.
Construction crews are now moving dirt and tearing up the old foundation. Last summer, crews knocked down what was left of the old school, paving the way for the new building.
School officials said the school will take 18 to 24 months to finish, but it's something the town has been looking forward to for almost two years.
Students, faculty, and staff will remain in the portable units during the construction process.
