HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
A new law affecting Alabama
drivers goes into effect on Tuesday.
The law gives police a new tool
to better enforce the state's mandatory liability insurance law. It's an online
verification system.
The way it works is that it
sends a message to an insurance company, and then the company will send a
message back saying whether or not a motorist is actually covered. The
verification will take place when a car tag is renewed or issued.
Violators face fines and even a lot more.
"That vehicle will be towed and it will be at the expense of
the driver," Alabama State Trooper Curtis Summerville said.
He said there is nothing new you
need to do as a driver under the new law but to simply make sure you have updated
insurance.
