HOOVER, AL (WBRC) -
Hoover police have arrested a former Spain Park High School teacher for allegedly having sex with a former student.
Police
say that Stephanie Suggs Millard, 33 of Moody, is being held on bond
totaling $30,000. She is charged with two counts of engaging in a sexual
act wtih a student under the age of 19. Warrants for her arrest were
issued Thursday and Millard surrendered to police at 3:45 p.m.
Hoover school system spokesperson Jason Gaston tells me that officials
are not going to comment on the matter. However he did confirm that
Millard resigned from her job on Dec. 13 but police say they were
notified of the situation while Millard while still a teacher in the
school system.
The alleged incidents happened earlier this year, in March and
April, but they were just recently reported to school officials, who in
turn reported them to law enforcement. Hoover Police Captain Jim Coker
says the department's Family Service division then began an
investigation.
"I think this is probably unusual anywhere. Parents send their
children to school with an expectation that they're children will be
cared for. The school, as soon as they realized they had an issue,
contacted law enforcement and it was pursued," Coker said.
Police say that the young man was 17 at the time of in the incidents
and even though this is above the legal age of consent, this is still a
crime in Alabama it's illegal for an educator to have sex with a student
under the age of 19.
Anyone with additional information about this case is encouraged to call Family Services Lt. Harry Long at 205-739-7440.
