Shelters work to fill need

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Area shelters are scrambling to make room for those trying to get out of the cold. While these frigid temperatures can be uncomfortable for all of us, they are downright dangerous for people who don't have a place to stay warm.

Ronald Smith with the Friendship Mission said his crew is hard at work making sure those who need a place to stay have it.

"We're a small shelter, we do the best we can, when we can," said Smith, who is the Assistant Director at the Mission.

The Salvation Army fed 150 people during its Christmas dinner. It also expects a number of people to seek shelter from the cold the next few days.

"30 degrees or below 35, we definitely want to get everyone out of the cold," said Jason Davis, with the Salvation Army. "The same goes with tornadoes, hurricanes what have you. Right now, our shelter is about 90 percent occupied.  We did open up cots."

There's an estimated 1500 people who are homeless in the City of Montgomery, so there's a need even these two shelters can't fill.

"These are the only two shelters that I know of that are taking people in during the cold season," Smith said.  "And that's not quite enough shelters, there's more homeless than that in Montgomery."

Those in need of help can contact the shelters directly, and they will assist those who need help long-term.
