Consumer tips for Christmas returns

Of course a lot of people are hitting the stores the day after Christmas, not to buy gifts, but return them.

The Better Business Bureau receives hundreds of complaints every year because returning an item isn't always easy.

But consumers do have rights when it comes to returns, refunds and exchanges. The key is reading the fine print.

The BBB recommends knowing the seller's return policy before even requesting one. Remember, stores are not required to grant a return or exchange.

Also, double-check whether the gift was a sale or clearance item. Many stores consider these purchases a final sale, and you receiving it as a gift won't change their policy.

Also, if the item is "defective," the BBB says you can expect a substitute, refund, or repair. But keep in mind, broken or defective items may need to go to the manufacturer and not the seller. In this case, read the item's warranty if there is one.

Finally, don't waste any time. If you want to make a return or exchange, do it promptly. Many return policies have a time limit.
