As the last of those who lost their lives in the sandy hook elementary shootings are laid to rest, I can't help but think about those left behind. The parents of those taken will likely never recover and the children who survived will never regain the innocence they lost. I hope in the aftermath of this tragic event that we all have an added appreciation for the level of commitment those who care for our kids have. Without thinking twice so many educators sprung to action saving students lives, six giving their own to protect the innocents in their care. Too often we take for granted the people who care for our kids. Too many times requests for higher pay are rebuffed and too often people criticize the summers off that many educators receive. It is time to recognize the real value of our educators. As we were shown in sandy hook, not only do they have the responsibility for shaping young lives, they also have the responsibility for protecting them.
