ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

Residents in Arab want the people of Newtown, Connecticut to know they're in their thoughts and prayers.

And they've got a very public way of showing it.

A lot of people are taking the time to put in writing what they feel while prompting some tears for victims they never even knew.

A flag flies outside the Arab Post Office at half staff to remember those 26 people who lost their lives in the school shooting at Newtown, Connecticut, but the tribute on the inside is much more personal.

"This allows us to show God's love through all of us by sending this up there - something nice from our community to do something nice for another community," said postal employee and organizer, Donna Wilks.

Wilks put some wrapping paper on the wall earlier this week. Residents have been signing their thoughts and prayers, but Wilks has been surprised by the number of writings. She's had to add more and more paper.

"Absolutely because this is all we had intended was just this little part right here," she said.

Gloria SunserI said she was amazed when she walked in to see the banner a couple of days ago.

"I couldn't believe it.  I just thought it was so awesome, and I was so proud of our little town," she said.

Like many others who now walk into the post office, she too couldn't resist the urge to write from her heart to the hearts of the people of Newtown.

"I wrote, 'God bless your town in this time of need.'  Why did I write it?  Because it's just a horrible tragedy that happened and they all need God with them right now," Sunseri said.

Wilks said the banner will stay on the wall until Monday. At that time it will be taken down and sent to Newtown.
