MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

People in Marshall County paid tribute to the victims of the April 2011 tornado outbreak and those who were involved in the recovery.

County commission chairman James Hutcheson said they chose the words to go on the monument because they just couldn't afford a monument big enough to thank everyone who has helped since the tragedy.

The rain held up long enough for the monument placed outside the Marshall County courthouse to be unveiled.

Hutcheson said the idea began more than a year ago with the EMA director to see how they could pay tribute to those who lost their lives and those who helped that deadly day of April 27, 2011.

Many there said a kind word and reflected on that day.

The Hallmark family lost several members in the tragedy in the Ruth community.

Some surviving members were there and felt the memorial was touching as they continue on without some of their loved ones.

"It's still difficult at times.  We still have our obstacles we having to overcome with everything.  But it's getting better.  We're healing," said Ricky Hallmark.

The county commission approved the $1,000 cost of the monument last year.
