LIMESTONE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Limestone County School Superintendent Tom Sisk has put together a video to let parents know that the district is committed to keeping students safe.
The announcement comes just five days after six staff members and 20 children were killed by a gunman at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Sisk said the district was planning on improving safety procedures well before the Sandy Hook shooting.
On Friday, the school system will receive $45,000 dollars in extra funding to be used to enhance school security. Sisk is also pushing for eight school resource officers to be added. Right now the district only has six, which are all assigned to high schools.
Sisk said a resource officer could have helped the day the gunman walked into Sandy Hook.
"Had there been a resource officer at Sandy Hook, he might not have killed as many of those children, but we'll never know," he said.
Sisk said he plans on updating the public in the future through more video addresses. Here is a link the district's website where you can find a link to today's video address.
