DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Decatur City Schools representatives said they are taking extra precautions in the wake of the mass shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
Friday, 26 people were shot at a Newtown, Connecticut school when Adam Lanza forced his way into the school. Lanza's mother was killed at a residence and Lanza committed suicide.
Dr. Ed Nichols, superintendent of Decatur City Schools, released a voicemail statement that said the school has been in communication with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of their schools.
"I know that all of us are saddened by yesterday's tragic incident in Newtown, Connecticut. Since learning of this event, our school system has been in communication with our local police to ensure that we are taking every precaution to maintain a safe school environment. Your child's safety is our priority in the days ahead," said Nichols.
Nichols said that the staff is available for assistance and the school has a safe school's Decatur tip line which can be reached at 256-227-8514.
