FLORENCE, AL (WAFF) -

The education association wants more transparency from the Florence city school board.

There's concern over whether or not the board is listening to the community.

Bottom line: Educators want to feel confident about going to the school board and discussing issues that are important to them - something they don't feel comfortable doing now.

Earlier this week, a representative from the Alabama Education Association told the school board the Florence group has confidence issues with their school board.

They feel there is a lack of transparency when it comes to making decisions regarding salaries, positions, and other changes.

The group has requested a special meeting in January with board members to discuss the concerns in-depth and ways to move forward.

School board president Bill Jordan said the accusations were unexpected.

"It is tough. We do everything based on what's best for kids and focus our attention on what's best for students, and sometimes those decisions may not be popular, but we still have to remain focused on what's best for all our students. And if we do that, we know we've made the right decision," said  Jordan.

The local representative for the AEA was unavailable to comment on the situation.
