LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Seven members of the Jacksonville State softball team were tabbed as 2012 All-America Scholar Athletes by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) on Wednesday, the sport's governing body announced.
The NFCA All-America Scholar Athlete award is bestowed upon any player submitted by a member coach who achieved a 3.50 grade point average or higher during the 2011-12 academic year.
The Gamecocks that received the honor are sophomore pitcher Tiffany Harbin, junior second baseman Kelci Johnston, senior designated hitter Abbey Stepp, junior outfielder Krystal Ruth, junior outfielder Jessica Guy, freshman outfielder Sara Borders and freshman third baseman Savannah Sloan.
The Gamecocks are gearing up for the 2013 season, which will begin at the Southeastern Louisiana Invitational on Feb. 8 in Hammond, La., against St. Louis.
JSU will open a newly renovated University Field on Feb. 3 with its annual Fan Day and will open the home schedule against Alabama A&M on Feb. 19 at 4 p.m.
