Huntsville City Schools receive district-wide accreditation

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The Huntsville City Schools found out Wednesday they made the grade for district-wide accreditation status.

This is the first time the district pursued what they have called "world-class" status in education.

More than a year of preparation led to a three-day intensive review that began on Sunday.

Team members from audit organization AdvancEd interviewed school leaders, principals and visited schools during the review period.

The team presented their findings before the school board during a special meeting at the Annie Merts Center in Huntsville Wednesday afternoon at 2:30.

School officials stated the new accreditation status will cut $169,000 taxpayer dollars in individual school audit costs.

The endeavor also aims to further improve school policies within the district, Superintendent Dr. Casey Wardynski stated in a news release regarding the announcement.

"Regardless of this report card, we know that there will be another report card, and another, and we must not stop working to improve," Wardynski said.

Standards to achieve accreditation status include governance and leadership, teaching curriculums, and resources and support systems.

The accreditation process began in fall of 2011 when school officials made sweeping changes to district policies that include merging schools, moving principals and forging new partnerships with local colleges.

Wardynski also spearheaded a district-wide digital transition that has garnered national attention.
