MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Organizers chose Marshall County to take part in a pilot program that aims to help veterans facing legal trouble. Court officials there are already preparing for their first veterans court.

It will work pretty much like a county's drug court. If the veteran completes the program, the charge against them will be dismissed.

Executive director Marcheta Shaw said with post-traumatic stress disorder and traumatic brain injury, veterans sometimes are coming home and committing crimes, most notably through substance abuse.

Veterans who have city or county misdemeanor or felony charges can seek application into the program.

Shaw said the program is designed to help the vets get back on track and have their charges dismissed if the complete the program

Shaw said they've even got a component of the program which gets veterans involved.

"We're looking for any veterans out there that would like to talk to us about being a peer mentor and just give back and help some of their fellow veterans that are stumbling and having a little trouble helping them get back on track and that's really our goal," said Shaw.

Shaw said any vet with a non-violent charge in Marshall County should ask their attorney or court to be referred to the program.

The first docket for the program is expected in January.
