Officials from the Governor's Office of Homeland Security toured parts of Baker Tuesday to assess damage left behind from Monday's storm system.
Meanwhile, East Baton Rouge Mayor Kip Holden is warning people to watch out for scammers as they work to repair their homes. The mayor declared a local disaster in parts of the parish. The National Weather Service confirms a tornado touched down in Baker and the community of Alsen.
"I was scared," said lifelong Alsen resident Moses Evans Junior. "I thought I was going to find bodies out here."
Evans owns land in the area and stores cars and trucks on parts of
it. The tornado ripped right through his yard tossing vehicles around.
"I have a truck that's missing, I got a car that's missing, I got
a portable building that's missing," Moses said.
"It's like on Star Trek, it's like Scotty beamed it away. The real
humbling thing to think about, all of this is material stuff."
City officials say around 150 properties were damaged.
"It's a great thing to be breathing and be alive," Moses
said. "It's special. And for anybody who's caught up in materialism
don't worry about it. It'll be here when we are gone and life is the most
important thing. It's special. It's a great feeling. It's a great feeling to be
A confirmed tornado also caused damaged in Ascension Parish. The 7th District Fire Station in Gonzales had severe damage to the front of the building, with windows and walls destroyed.
