Cape Canaveral, FL -

The United Launch Alliance sent another orbital test vehicle to space on Tuesday, making it the company's 10th and final launch of 2012.

ULA's Atlas V rocket launching system blasted off from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida at 1:03 p.m. Eastern Time.

Atlas V is carrying the Orbital Test Vehicle to space on behalf of the U.S. Air Force.

Also known as the OTV-3, the prototype plane will support space experimentation and development for reusable space vehicle technologies, according to a ULA spokesperson.

Engineers said the unmanned plane can fly 500 miles above the earth at speeds of 17,000 miles an hour.

ULA's next launch is scheduled at the end of January when NASA will send communications satellites into space.
