PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Southeastern Louisiana University football standout Robert Alford earned additional postseason honors on Monday when he was one of seven Southland Conference players named to The Sports Network FCS All-America team.
In helping Southeastern to a 5-6 overall record and its best league mark – 5-2 – since joining the Southland Conference in 2005, Alford joins former Lions Felton Huggins (WR, 3rd team, 2004), Jeff Turner (K, Honorable mention, 2007) and Tommy Connors (DB, 2nd team, 2008) as Sports Network FCS All-Americans.
Already named a first-team All-Southland Conference selection, a Buchanan Award Watch List finalist and an invitee to the 2013 Senior Bowl, Alford becomes Southeastern's 30th All-America selection in football dating back to 1937 when James Carlin was named an Associated Press Little All-American.
Alford recorded 39 tackles on the season while tying for the Southland Conference lead with four interceptions. He added five tackles for loss on the season and led the Lions with 12 passes defended. He totaled a season-high seven tackles with two pass breakups and a fourth-quarter interception in a 25-24 victory over nationally-ranked McNeese State.
Alford added interceptions against Lamar, Northwestern State and Stephen F. Austin and averaged 14.1 yards as a punt returner during the season, highlighted by a 75-yard return for a touchdown at Lamar – the fourth-longest return in school history.
