SCOTTSBORO, AL (WAFF) -

The Scottsboro city council hopes to fill a council vacancy left behind after their president resigned following his election to the county commission, but they're having a difficult time filling it.

They have tried to find a candidate, but because there is an even amount of council members left, they cannot find a candidate to get a majority vote.

The Scottsboro city council meets again Monday and hopes to pick a candidate to fill the spot vacated by Matthew Hodges.

Hodges resigned from his position on the council in November after he was elected as chairman of the Jackson County Commission. That left council members the responsibility of filling that vacated seat.

When the council met last, council members were divided at two each for two candidates.

"I don't have a vote, so I don't know what the council is thinking.  I've got every confidence in the world that they will get it resolved and hopefully it will be tonight.  If not, we have another council meeting scheduled for next week before the holidays, so either this week or next week I would think that a decision would be made," said Mayor Melton Potter.

If a candidate is not selected within 60 days, the selection will then go to the governor's office for him to select or order a special election.
