HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A Huntsville man is banged up after a freak accident. The ceiling fell in outside his apartment.

Firefighters rushed to the scene at the Seville Apartments on Patton Road to make sure there wasn't a danger of still more collapse.

Witnesses said 61-year-old John Griffin was dazed, but able to walk with help as paramedics took him to the hospital.

He had just stepped out of his apartment door when the ceiling of the stairwell collapsed, showering him with big chunks of sheetrock.

The victim's friend, Sylvester Brooks, was a few steps in front of him and said it all came down quickly.

"He came back out, closed the door, and everything fell right on him, right on the back of his head.   And he slid down about three to four steps there, couldn't move. How much came down on top of him?  Quite a bit," Brooks said.

Firefighters on the scene said there was no immediately obvious cause for the collapse; there was no sign of a roof leak and the sheetrock wasn't wet.
