Former Albertville city council member and state trooper Chuck Ellis is now at a local rehab facility.

He was hit while jogging in Albertville last week.

There is video of the accident, and Ellis said it was tough to watch.  Even talking about it brought some tears to his eyes.

Ellis is used to life's challenges, and he plans to tackle this one head on.

For Ellis, recovery is all about baby steps.

"I think back, what if I had gotten on the elliptical that morning and ridden it for 30 minutes instead  of going for a walk.  What would I be doing now?  I'd probably be at work.  I wouldn't be here," he said.

Ellis is currently in physical therapy.  It was just over a week ago he was jogging across Baltimore Avenue in Albertville and almost made it across when a truck turned into his path.

"And the first thought was, 'He's not stopping.  Jump,'" he said.

His helpless body smashed into the truck's windshield and catapulted into the back of the truck.

He's now rehabilitating a separated shoulder, a newly constructed shoulder, a broken leg, and broken ribs.

"It's probably going to be the most difficult thing I do because I can't move my arms right now," said Ellis.

But he's got a positive attitude about the young 16-year-old driver who hit him.

"It was an accident.  There was no malice in it.  He just didn't see me," he said.

And for the toughest challenge he's facing in life thus far:

"I'm determined I'll be back working in Marshall County by the summer," Ellis said.

He still has a few more weeks in the acute care rehabilitation facility.

When he goes back to work, the Alabama state trooper said he will have a new perspective about road traffic.
