ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

There's a push to give new lift to downtown Arab.

A new proposal would give the Downtown Redevelopment Authority a $100,000 appropriation.

If the money is appropriated to the Downtown Redevelopment Authority, officials say that will allow them to get started on phase one of the downtown projects.

Authority Treasurer Katy Norton said the funds would be a big boost for their project.

Phase one includes the purchase of the entire block of Main Street and 4th Avenue, the gateway to the downtown area.

Norton said the hope is to convert the city's first high school building into a convention center and fine arts center.

The area next to Main Street, Norton said, would become a green space area.

The $100,000 is currently just an appropriation consideration for the city council.

The mayor said the city's budget has not yet been voted on.

Norton said there are many phases to the project that will include other portions of downtown.  In order to get it completed, she estimates that will take up to 10 years.
