Last week we broke the story about the federal investigation into Huntsville City schools. The U-S Department of Education office for civil rights wants to take a close look at how the district handled allegations that a teacher took class time to preach from the bible and attack a student's sexual orientation. Parents and student advocates who have demanded answers have long said they haven't gotten what they expected from the district. They said they were dismissed and ignored. Now it appears the district will have no choice but to come clean. It is unfortunate that it takes a federal investigation to get answers. I have said before that the district has a public relations problem. Now it appears the government is saying a p-r problem is the best case scenario. Our schools have to change their ways. I hope that this investigation, regardless of the outcome, will make the district realize that dismissing parents and students concerns doesn't make the problems go away.
