MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
The wildfire burning in Marshall County is still burning, but it has been contained.
The fire, in the area of Vandergriff Road in the Alder Springs community, is estimated to have burned 160 acres, and it is creating heavy smoke. It is burning in a mountainous area where a tornado left debris in 2011. Some of that debris is fueling the fire.
Members of the Alabama A&M "FireDawgs" and area volunteer fire departments, along with the state forestry commission crews, worked to get the fire under control.
Forestry commission officials said crews used dozers to cut a fire line to contain the blaze.
The fire was contained before it reached any structures. The fire started some time early Sunday afternoon, and it was contained by 9 p.m. Monday.
The Alabama Forestry Commission said the cause is unknown and under investigation, but they did say they are looking at arson as one possible cause.
