Neighboring states look to Mississippi

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

They may have separate jurisdictions and live in separate states but for a group of law enforcement officers, state lines are just an opportunity to work together.

"Technology has changed so that you've got to access all these different systems," said Colonel Donnell Berry with the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

Those systems are bringing together commanding officers from neighboring states. They're taking a good look at Mississippi's emergency and safety operations.

"When you talk about the South, when you talk about the partnerships that we have down here, we do it right," said Colonel Mike Edmonson with the Louisiana State Police.

Col. Berry says making sure neighboring states work together is crucial when it comes to disasters, emergencies and criminal activity.

"That's our job to keep people safe in the state of Mississippi," said Col. Berry."

With a tour of state's highway patrol, intelligence center and emergency management agency, Col. Edmonson says it's all about lasting partnerships and keeping up other states.

"Eighty five percent of our violent crimes have two common dominators. Either it's drugs or illegal weapons. We see that in Louisiana. We see that in Mississippi," said Col. Edmonson.

With the evolution of technology, staying up to date on what other states are doing help to make sure policies, procedures and information stay ahead of the bad guys.

"We don't have to reinvent the wheel. If I'm doing something right in Louisiana or they're doing something right in Mississippi, let's take it and let's use it, let's put it in immediate action. The public not only expects that out of us, they demand that of us," said Col. Edmonson.
