HUNTSVILLE, AL (Huntsville Havoc Press Release) - The Huntsville Havoc dropped a 4-2 decision at home on Thursday night before winning at Augusta 2-1 in a shootout on Friday and falling 6-2 to Fayetteville on Saturday.
Thursday, November 29 - Mississippi Surge 4, Huntsville 2
HUNTSVILLE, AL - The Huntsville Havoc almost clawed their way back from a three-goal deficit, but Mississippi Surge managed to pull out a 4-2 win in the end.
Mississippi Surge led by three goals at one point and ended with the victory. The largest advantage in the game came when Mississippi Surge's Payden Benning's scored at 8:58 in the second period to put Mississippi Surge up 4-1.
Jeff Grant was all over the ice for Mississippi Surge, as he tallied one goal and two assists in the win. Grant scored on the power play 9:48 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Mississippi Surge. A charging penalty on Aaron McGill had put Mississippi Surge on the power play. James Isaacs assisted on the tally.Mississippi Surge's offense was clicking better than usual and put 33 shots on goal during the game, better than the 24.8 shots per game it averages.
Richard VanderHoek also scored for Mississippi Surge. More assists for Mississippi Surge came via Kyle VanderMale, Corey Tamblyn, and Derek Graham, who each chipped in one.
Huntsville kept Mississippi Surge's goalie busy throughout the game, and Dan Clark made 31 saves on 33 shots.
The Havoc were helped by Bill Baker, who finished with one goal. Baker scored 13:38 into the second period to make the score 4-2 Mississippi Surge. Stuart Stefan picked up the assist. Huntsville also got points from Colin Reddin, who also registered one goal and one assist to lead the team in points. In addition, Huntsville received assists from Mike MacDonald and Chapen LeBlond, who contributed one a piece.
Mississippi Surge totaled 15 minutes in penalty time with five minors and one major and went 1-for-3 on the power play. Dan McWhinney rejected 29 shots on goal for Huntsville. The Havoc totaled 13 minutes in penalty time with four minors and one major and went 1-for-4 on the power play.
Friday, November 30 - Huntsville 2, Augusta 1 - SO
AUGUSTA, GA - Jeremiah Ketts netted the deciding goal for the Huntsville Havoc in the shootout as Havoc prevailed over the Augusta RiverHawks, 2-1 (3-1 SO).
The shootout lasted for nine attempts between the teams. Augusta got a shootout goal from Matt Auffrey. Huntsville also got shootout goals from Ian Boots and Ketts.
The Havoc came back from a one-goal deficit to capture the victory. Huntsville fell behind 1-0 after a goal by the RiverHawks' Matt Atsoff at 4:24 in the first period. The Havoc knotted things up at 1-1 on a short handed goal by Matt Smyth at 4:26 in the third period.
Huntsville's Jonathan LaRose was a brick wall in net, as he came up with 45 saves and let only one puck past him. LaRose certainly lowered his goals against average, which was 4.0 entering the contest.
The the Havoc penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled six minors and two majors for 22 minutes in penalty time. Huntsville surpassed its season average of 19.0 penalty minutes per game. The Havoc put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Augusta to score on any of its six power plays.
More assists for Huntsville came via Boots, who had one.
Huntsville was unable to stop the RiverHawks from sending pucks towards the net, and Augusta eventually piled up 46 shots on goal.
In addition, Augusta received assists from Dennis Sicard and Chad Ziegler, who each chipped in one.
The Havoc registered zero goals on one power play opportunities. The RiverHawks' BJ OBrien stopped 23 shots out of the 24 that he faced. Augusta ended with 12 minutes in penalty time with one minor and two majors.
Saturday, December 1 - Huntsville 2, Fayetteville 6
FAYETTEVILLE, NC - The Fayetteville FireAntz's Josh McQuade had a big offensive game, scoring two goals and contributing two assists in his team's 6-2 win over the Huntsville Havoc.
McQuade found the back of the net 2:29 into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fayetteville and again while 13:12 into the first to make the score 3-0 Fayetteville.
The Fayetteville penalty box was a popular destination as the team totaled four minors and three majors for 23 minutes in penalty time. The total exceeded the 19.0 minutes per game the FireAntz had been spending in the box. Fayetteville put up an impenetrable defensive front on the penalty kill, and did not allow Huntsville to score on any of its four power plays.
Fayetteville additionally got points from Derek Elliott, who also had one goal and two assists and Kyle McNeil, who also grabbed one goal and one assist. Mike Gurtler also scored for Fayetteville. Other players who recorded assists for Fayetteville were Brandon Richardson, who had one and Brian Elser, Bobby Reed, and Kyle Frieday, who contributed two a piece.
The Havoc's offense was clicking better than usual and put 39 shots on goal during the game, better than the 22.9 shots per game they average.
Shane Madolora recorded 37 saves for the FireAntz. Fayetteville registered one goal on two power play opportunities. Huntsville's starting goalie, Jonathan LaRose, made 15 saves and finished with the loss before he was taken out in favor of Dan McWhinney, who stopped six shots. The Havoc ended with 19 minutes in penalty time with two minors and three majors.
