HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The folks at Toys for Tots are sounding the alarm to make sure needy kids get a Merry Christmas.
As usual, the Toys for Tots Holiday Toy Drive is in full swing, but volunteers said the pickings have been unusually lean so far this year.
Donations just haven't been coming in.
They say they're so short on some categories of toys that they actually have to spend their money to go to the store and buy toys because they don't have enough donated toys. That usually happens eventually every year, but not this early.
"The drop box locations, normally about this time, we start getting calls from businesses saying, 'My box is full. Where can we drop off or can you come get it?'" said Sgt. Keith Langford with Toys for Tots. "We're just not at that level yet, so it's putting us behind schedule that I like to be on."
Toys for Tots volunteers say they're in the most need of toys for very young children, between ages 0 and 2, but also for girls up to age 4.
