Woman killed in freak accident with deer

(WMC-TV) - A Ripley woman is dead after a freak accident.  Police say a deer went through her windshield as she was driving to work Wednesday morning.

Ruth Cohill, 37, was president of the local Exchange Club in Ripley, TN.  In fact, it was hard to find something she was not involved in.

"She was my baby, that's my baby," said her godmother Doris Stocklin.

Stocklin says Cohill's bright smile was the window to her soul.

"She didn't have just friendships with people, she had relationships with people. She kept in touch with everything," she added.

Cohill was a student recruiter at Tennessee Technology Center in Ripley.

She coordinated the Making a Difference program that worked with middle and high school students in regards to abstinence.

The highway patrol says the accident happened along Highway 87 just outside Henning.

Cohill was traveling toward town when a car in the other lane hit a deer pushing that deer into Cohills' windshield.

The highway patrol says that is what killed her.

"There will never be another Ruth Cohill. She was truly special and to know her was to love her," said TN Technology student Sharifa Hawkins.

Cohill was an ambassador for the Lauderdale County Chamber of Commerce, served on the board of the local child abuse prevention center, and gave free music lessons.

She won several awards as an emerging business leader in Tipton, Lauderdale, and Crockett counties.

"My one child wanted to know when I told him about her death if he could have her badge from here with her picture on it as a remembrance," said co-worker Belinda Douglas.

As her family prepares to lay her to rest, they also remember her many accomplishments.

"Well done, well done my girl. That's my sweet girl and now I have to go on without her," said her godmother.

Ripley officials dedicated Thursday night's Christmas parade to Ruth Cohill.

Her family plans to bury her on Saturday.

Thompson's Mortuary in Ripley is handling Ruth Cohill's arrangements.

Showers and storms will be ongoing across the Valley this evening. The most widespread rain will be over northeastern AL, but additional scattered storms will track into the Shoals from the west. That round of stormy weather will head east with time and should be out of the Valley after midnight. The threat for severe storms is low, but a few strong storms are possible.
