Doubleheader at Spragins Hall, Chargers host West Georgia

Posted: Updated:

The fourth-ranked University of Alabama in Huntsville men's basketball team will open up Gulf South Conference play on Thursday night, welcoming West Georgia to Kelly Court at Spragins Hall for a 7:30 p.m. showdown. The Chargers enter the game at 4-1 on the year, while UWG owns a 2-2 mark.

The Chargers return home for the first time in nearly two weeks, and have had a nice break since wrapping up a stretch that saw the team play five games in seven days. Closing out that period, UAH turned in a strong performance at the West Florida Thanksgiving Classic, erasing a halftime deficit to beat Tuskegee 81-66 and then hitting 14 3-pointers en route to a 76-61 victory over Albany State.

Leading the Blue and White, Jaime Smith tops a trio of Chargers who are averaging in double figures as he has recorded 12.0 points per game on the strength of 16 3-pointers – a number that paces the GSC. The squad continues to also receive strong play from Ronnie Mack who has scored 10.2 points per game, connecting on 56.7 percent of his shots to sit in a tie with Conner Blasi for fifth in the league in field goal percentage.

The meeting with West Georgia marks the 43rd in the all-time series between the two programs with both teams recording 21 wins. Last year, the home court was defended by both as UWG won an 82-79 overtime decision in Carrollton before the Chargers avenged the loss with a 66-58 victory at home.

Smith paced the Chargers against the Wolves last season, averaging 18.0 points in the two games, including a 7-for-14 showing from long-range. Zane Campbell was also strong in the season series, averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds.
