MARSHALL COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
Marshall County's revenue commissioner is hoping to clear the air after a state audit claimed he gave property tax breaks to him and his family.
The audit claims Joey Masters benefited by reducing the price of his home, and a family member was allowed two homestead exemptions. But, Masters admitted that mistakes were made, but he said there was no criminal wrongdoing.
Masters said his mother receives two such exemptions because one of the homes is a family member's estate in her name, and it's justified because of a 2006 attorney general's ruling.
The audit also claims Masters benefited because he reduced his own property value. Masters said his home was not appraised correctly to begin with.
During an appraisal of the home it was discovered the square footage of the home was overstated so it was adjusted to be appraised at its true square footage.
Masters said when the home was sold it was sold at below the appraised price.
