DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -
DeKalb County is moving closer to construction of six community storm shelters after an extended delay.
Emergency Management Agency officials informed the county commission Tuesday of their plans to move forward with the construction - construction that is nearly a year overdue.
EMA Director Anthony Clifton said construction of the shelters is expected to begin any day now.
Community shelters are planned for construction in the towns of Powell, Henagar, Sylvania, Shiloh, Fyffe and Geraldine.
The project was stopped in December 2011 when bids were opened due to a disagreement among two state agencies concerning who had jurisdiction of state shelter projects. That has since been resolved and Clifton said bids have now been opened and approved.
Clifton said all requests for federal funding for the community as well as individual home shelter projects have been approved by the state.
Clifton said he expects the first shelter could be complete sometime in January.
