Cab driver robbery puts other companies on edge

Posted: Updated:

Huntsville Police are investigating the robbery and attempted murder of a cab driver.

According to the police report, the victim, a driver for A Plus Cab, was dispatched to pick up a passenger on Fairway Drive at just before 6 a.m. on Tuesday.

The unknown subject got in her cab, told her to drive to Perkins and Parklane, then pulled a gun on the driver. The offender stole the cabbie's fares and ordered the driver, with the gun aimed at her head, to get out of the car.

Fearing for her life, the victim put the cab in drive and accelerated. The subject shot at the driver. The bullet went through the headrest, but didn't hit the cabbie.

Workers at A Plus Cab said the driver is taking some personal time and the cab is back on the streets.

The cab driver said she wasn't afraid of the man when he got in the cab and he didn't look like he wanted to hurt someone until it was too late.

She said she'd only been working for the company for two weeks and she really hopes that police find the man.

News of the shooting has put other cab companies on edge. Manager at A-1 United Deluxe Cab, Robert Ayers, said if his men don't feel good about where they are going or who they are picking up, they won't go.

"I tell them if you feel like it's not safe when they call, don't pick them up," he said. "Just let it go. Every dollar isn't a good dollar."

Huntsville Police are still investigating Tuesday's incident.
