UNA Women Get Win

FLORENCE – The University of North Alabama women's basketball team improved to 5-2 on the season with a dominating 7-29 victory over Lane College Monday evening at Flowers Hall. The Lions used a suffocating defense, forcing as many turnovers as the Dragons had points.

Mekena Randle scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in only 19 minutes of playing time for the Lions. Kaseama Ashbourne added 12 points while Delisa Madry tossed in 11 points on the night.

Lane (0-2) had 29 turnovers for the game, the last one coming in the closing seconds when a steal by Madry led to a buzzer-beating layup by Rabun Wright as time expired. UNA turned the Dragon miscues into 28 points. The Lions also held considerable advantages in fast-break points (20-0), points in the paint (48-14) and bench scoring (38-2).

Eleven different UNA players scored in the game as the Lions shot 50 percent (30-of-60) from the floor. By contrast, Lane was held to 18.5 percent shooting.

UNA will now turn its attention to Gulf South Conference play, which begins Thursday against West Florida. Tip-off against the Argonauts is set for 6 p.m. at Flowers Hall.
