BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -

A building at a Baton Rouge business was destroyed, leading to a road closure and a large cleanup effort, after a two-alarm fire early Friday morning.

It sparked at Baton Rouge Bus Maintenance on Greenwell Springs Road around 1:15 a.m.

The Baton Rouge Fire Department reported it took firefighters almost two hours to get the blaze under control.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Greenwell Springs Road was closed from Victoria Drive to Lobdell Avenue for several hours because motor oil from the business flowed into the street. The roadway was reopened a little before noon.

Firefighters said they drove up to the scene to find the building completely engulfed in flames and the roof collapsed not long after their arrival.

They were able to keep the flames from spreading to a second building.

However, the site of the fire is considered a total loss.

Fire officials said there were at least two buses inside the building.

Baton Rouge Fire Department Hazardous Materials units were called out to the scene because of the spilled oil.

BRFD said Exxon Mobile sent additional equipment to assist hazmat in containing the spill.

The Department of Environmental Quality was notified and also responded to the scene.

The fire department said the owner of the bus maintenance company hired a private contractor to do the cleanup.

Officials added the fire caused about $300,000 worth of damage to the building.
