ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -
We counted our blessings on Thanksgiving. Now, we look ahead to the spirit of giving.
The Holiday Inn in Athens joins Steelcase Athens for its "Coats for Kids" drive starting Monday.
The hotel will accept donations of new coats and jackets for families that cannot afford to buy one for their children this winter.
Holiday Inn General Manager Christa Cole started organizing the effort last year.
"When you have a child who is going to school and walking outside and doesn't have a warm jacket, that would break my heart," Cole said.
Cole said people donated about 100 coats last year. They went straight to the Limestone County Department of Human Resources, which then gave the coats to families in need.
Cole was impressed by the generosity that year so she's holding "Coats for Kids" again this year and hoping for an equal, if not greater turnout.
"So many people are out of work and don't have the money to give the children a good Christmas and things like that so they work so hard," Cole said.
While a coat may not be as shiny or fun as a new toy, Cole knows plenty of children will appreciate the gift of warmth.
"Something simple that people don't think about; something as simple as being warm," Cole said.
Anyone interested in donating a coat can drop it off at the reception desk at the Holiday Inn on 16074 Athens-Limestone Blvd. They will accept new coats for kids starting Monday through December 9.
