DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -
Some Decatur groups joined together to provide a different kind of Thanksgiving dinner.
Volunteers with local churches and organizations have been gathering for the past few years at Austinville Methodist Church to provide Thanksgiving dinner for Morgan County inmates.
"For so many of these volunteers being able to serve these prisoners is a blessing. And it's a blessing they recognize," said Carl DeLeo.
"It makes me feel good to know that there are people out there who care about us that much," said inmate Marcus Spangler.
"People like this uplift me, cause you know me and the rest of the brothers we're having a hard time and you know without our families and sometimes it gets rough on them and we just appreciate ya'll for blessing us with this meal," said inmate Brian Williams.
The numbers are growing every year and it is a community effort which uses a lot of volunteers.
""By doing this we are able to open up the doors and go into the prison system and teach them and work with them," said program director Richard Cassis.
Food was also provided to walk ins and people who normally get Meals on Wheels.
Hundreds of volunteers help serve the inmates.
