BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) -
A group from around the globe gathered together to share a Thanksgiving meal.
Refugees from several countries were at Our Lady of Mercy to experience their first Thanksgiving.
This marks the third year Catholic Charities has hosted the lunch.
They say some of those attending have only been in the U.S. for a few days and want to understand what being an American means. Some have even asked to be mentored by an American.
"To them it's just so fascinating to meet someone who grew up here with all this freedom," said Kristi Hackney with Catholic Charities. "No poverty or suffering, in their mind. No starvation anyway."
Catholic Charities is also collecting Christmas gifts for the families, things like blankets and coats.
