Insurance crackdown ordinance tabled

A controversial proposal was tabled once again at Tuesday's Montgomery City Council meeting.  One councilman is trying to crack down on drivers who don't have licenses or insurance by towing their cars, but it's been a rough road for the idea.

"The law says that you must have insurance," said Councilman Glen Pruitt.  "I didn't create it, all we're trying to is put some teeth in the law."

But the mayor says the ordinance raises some issues that still need to be considered.

"You could be from Birmingham and be on your way elsewhere and have a situation where we'd be impounding your car," said Mayor Todd Strange.  "So there's a lot of questions still out there.'

In the meantime, the city hopes to get a better idea of the scope of the problem with the help of a new state law.  Car insurance will now be verified online, and that will allow law enforcement to better track who has insurance and who doesn't.

"The police department's going to get us some more data from where we are now to about the May time frame to see if the numbers have decreased or not," Pruitt said.  "If not, then the mayor and the people in the work session were committed to coming back to revisiting it."

The mayor also wants a holistic approach to the situation: working with lawmakers, seeing what other cities are doing and working with judges to make sure the existing law is enforced.  The mayor stressed just because this ordinance is on hold that doesn't mean it's ok to drive without insurance.
