Thanksgiving is, as its name implies, a time for giving thanks. It is a time to spend with family and friends reflecting on all the things we are thankful for. Unfortunately, many people who work in retail will not get thanksgiving off. They will be working for what is the earliest start to black Friday shopping in our nation's history. Many stores have announced they will be open and start their sales on thanksgiving. Black Friday is a day when many get their Christmas gifts at great prices, but too many retailers are being grinches by insisting that their employees work. There is no question our economy could use the boost of an added day of great retail sales. But the reality is, most of us have a fixed amount we are able to spend on holiday items. Starting the spending spree early doesn't get people to spend more money than they would have - but it does have people spending more time away from their families than they should have.
