Vigil held for murder victim

Posted: Updated:
GEORGIANA, AL (WSFA) -

Family and friends gathered Monday night to remember a woman in Georgiana who was found murdered in her own home.

The candlelight vigil was held in the front yard of Dorothy Leatherwood, the turnout indicative of how much she was loved.

"I'm very hurt, it's hard to comprehend," said Rev. Isaiah Rudolph, Jr., Leatherwood's brother. "And I've been very sick behind this."

Rudolph led the vigil as the crowd lit candles, prayed and sang hymns.

"As you can see this is a close-knit community here," said Georgiana Mayor Jerome Antone.  "And this crime was a very heinous crime, and we just want to bring justice to Mrs. Leatherwood and her family."

Police questioned a person of interest, but have made no arrests. The family trusts it won't be long.

"(To) take her life away like he did, shame, shame on you," Rudolph said. "You're going to pay for it...may God have mercy on your soul."

But vengeance waits for another day as the family mourns.  Once the vigil was over, the family released 72 balloons -one for each of Leatherwood's years on Earth.

Leatherwood's funeral will be held at Friendship Baptist Church in Georgiana.  It is scheduled for 11 a.m. Tuesday.
