MORGAN COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

The Decatur City School district uses a lottery system to choose which kids will get into Pre-Kindergarten programs. This year, 126 made the cut, but there are hundreds of 4-year-olds who didn't get the chance.

Bridge Builders Church International is part of a coalition made up of school leaders and civic organizations working to get funding for more Pre-K classrooms. The school system, the Decatur-Morgan County Minority Development Association, and the Decatur-Morgan Chamber of Commerce are also involved.

"We find that if they're not in Pre-K, by the time they get to third grade, they're not socially or academically prepared to be in the classrooms," said Pastor Darius Crayton. "What we're trying to do is we're trying to get an additional 80 children, 80 4-year-olds, into a Pre-K program by the next school year."

The initiative is a pilot program that would rely on donations from businesses and residents.

"Five thousand dollars per child, per year, over the next three to five years is what we'd like to see happen," Crayton said.

They would need $400,000 for the 2013-14 school year. To be able to get it done in time to buy classroom supplies and equipment, the money needs to be raised by late January.

The United Way of Morgan County will allocate all donations. Call them at (256) 353-6643 for more information.
