HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
Thanksgiving is only one week away and charity groups are already planning ways to help people in the Valley who really need it.
Every year, the Downtown Rescue Mission helps the homeless and families in need during Thanksgiving.
The organization serves a Thanksgiving banquet for the homeless but also serves families who can't afford to prepare Thanksgiving dinner.
So they fill boxes with items for a Thanksgiving meal, including a frozen turkey.
Volunteers at the Downtown Rescue Mission will pack boxes at its location on Evangel Circle in Huntsville Sunday from 6 to 8 p.m.
This year, they plan on packaging 850 boxes for families. They will be delivered to the community on Monday.
On Thanksgiving Day, the mission will host its annual banquet for the homeless starting 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Volunteers will serve a warm, Thanksgiving meal at the mission on Wednesday as well.
