UAH Remains Perfect, Dispatches Montevallo 90-74

11/14/2012 | Women's Basketball

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. – The duo of Jasmine Hammon and Jordan Smith was impressive again, four scored in double figures, and the University of Alabama in Huntsville women's basketball team cruised to a 90-74 victory over visiting Montevallo on Wednesday evening. The Lady Chargers own a perfect 3-0 mark on the year with the win, and Montevallo drops to 0-3.
It was a long-range attack that helped create the triumph as Bailee Robinson (4-for-7), Hammon (3-for-9) and Smith (3-for-8) combined to shoot 47.6 percent from beyond the arc, while the team shot a strong 41.7 percent overall for the game from 3-point land.
Trailing 17-13 with 11:22 remaining in the opening period, the Lady Chargers scored the next eight points – a run that was bookended by Robinson treys – and grabbed a 21-17 advantage at the 7:57 mark.
The run completely flipped the game towards the Blue and White, and after Montevallo tied the game at 21-21 with 6:48 left until the half, Robinson answered with another 3-pointer on the next possession to provide the visitors with a lead that would grow to as many as 12 points as UAH took a 43-32 edge into the locker room at the half.
The Falcons would pull to within six at 50-44 with 15:39 left in the game but ultimately could come no closer as the Lady Chargers won for the third time in as many games.
Smith – the reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Week – paced the team with 23 points while dishing out four assists, and Hammon was on her heels with 22 point in the contest. Robinson tacked on 13 points, four assists and two steals.
Rounding out the double-figure scorers and nearly earning her first career double-double, freshman Halle Jarnagin scored 10 and cleaned up the glass nine times.
Montevallo outshot UAH in the contest by a 48.4 percent to 43.5 percent clip, but the difference in the ballgame was the Blue and White's strong showing from downtown compared to that of the hosts as UM connected on just one of their 11 3-point attempts.
Taylor Beverly paced the Falcons with 18 points.
UAH will hit the road for a pair of region games against Sunshine State Conference schools this weekend, taking on Florida Tech at 1 p.m. on Saturday before playing Nova Southeastern on Sunday at 11 a.m.
