HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -
The Huntsville City Council voted Thursday night in favor of a settlement to end a dispute between the Huntsville Police Department and a man two officers used excessive force on in 2011.
The council approved a $22,500 settlement for Gary Hopkins, the man seen on video being dragged out of a Huntsville police car.
Officer Brett Russell was fired because of the incident, but appealed the decision and was later reinstated.
City Attorney, Peter Joffrion said just because the settlement has been approved, doesn't mean the case is over.
"But until the plaintiff does accept the settlement offer and signs paper work releasing the city, then it's not completely over," he said.
Joffrion said it could take seven to 10 days before the settlement is completely over.
Hopkins' attorney, Eric Wood declined to comment on the case.
