GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Law enforcement in Guntersville said a woman was financially drained by someone who convinced her to hand over a huge amount of money.

Scammers are now urging people to use green dot cards to get them money, and it's just like handing someone cash.

"I just want people to know, don't fall for that sweet talk on the telephone," said "Lou."

Lou didn't know what a Moneypak Green Dot Card was five months ago and wishes now she never did.

Soon after this Guntersville woman's husband died this summer, she got a call from a clearing house who said she hit it big.

"$40-million - you've won a BMW," she said.

The caller said she first had to go to any local retailer to get a Moneypak Green Dot Card for $500 and give him the security code after scratching off the back.

"You will get it today.  And he said, 'I am a man of my word,'" Lou said.

But the need for another Moneypak card turned into the need for many more.

"He kept calling me sweetie this and sweetie that," she said.

After four months and many Moneypak cards, Lou lost all her money.

"I have lost all my money.  I don't have any left.  How much money are we talking about?  About 15,000," she said.

Guntersville Police Chief Jim Peterson said the elderly are a high target and it happens all too often.

"We get about two to three inquiries at least a month," he said.

"I don't know.  I just kept believing and I wanted to help my family," said Lou.

For people who have elderly people in their family, Peterson said it's a good idea to know what's going on in their lives to help protect them from scammers.
