BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -
Police say a man accused of robbing a bank is dead after he hung himself in the Birmingham City Jail last week.
James Horton, 54, was arrested for robbing the PNC Bank on First Avenue on November 5 . He was captured after a citizen and security guard stopped and detained him outside the bank building.
Police say the next morning around 7:30 a.m., a jail detention officer found Horton hanging in his jail cell. He was given CPR and treatment from Birmingham Fire and Rescue crews. According to police, Horton was breathing on his own before being taken to Cooper Green Mercy Hospital. He died in the hospital four days later on Saturday, November 10.
The Birmingham Police Department's Internal Affairs unit and the ABI are investigating Horton's death.
